Scoliosis During Pregnancy

As a rule, scoliosis (spinal curvature) occurs in person at an early age. If the problem is noticed in a timely manner, you can get rid of it once and forever, otherwise you will need to coexist with it for the lifelong period.

Pregnancy and Scoliosis

Sometimes the woman learns that they have scoliosis when they are already pregnant. It means that she had scoliosis of grade I that occurred because the spine started bearing additional load.

Even if the woman knew about her spinal problem before pregnancy that does not mean that she is unable to give birth to a healthy child. On the contrary, today there are many methods to support your spine (unfortunately, the complete cure is impossible) and relieve pain, which will help you to deliver a healthy baby.

Types of Scoliosis

Scoliosis And Pregnancy 1

Scoliosis I grade. It is a barely noticeable, minor vertebral displacement. Spinal curvature is not more than 10 degrees.

Scoliosis II grade. The Cobb angle (angle between the dislocated vertebrae) is about 11-25 degrees.

Scoliosis III grade. The Cobb angle is about 26-30 degree, a rib hump is present.

Scoliosis IV grade. This is the most dangerous type of scoliosis, the Cobb angle exceeds 30 degrees, the rib hump is visible. Women with this grade of the disease have their organs replaced, which can cause a miscarriage, abnormalities of the fetal development and is hazardous for both the mother and the baby.

Scoliosis Treatment During Pregnancy

As we have already said, it is difficult to treat scoliosis in adulthood, especially during pregnancy. The expectant mother has only one thing to do – she can find a good orthopedist who will help her to get rid of spinal pain and discomfort. The doctor will help you to select an individual program taking into account the degree of the disease, pregnancy peculiarities, complications and associated risks.

It can feature:

  • kinesiatrics, a unique method of treatment with the help of simulators;
  • physiotherapy;
  • special massage;
  • acupuncture.

The main objective of all these methods is to remove spinal pain and discomfort. The doctor will also prescribe you to wear a maternity belt, physical rest (that means that the expectant mom will have to take care of herself, avoid hard work etc.)

The pregnant woman should understand that a diagnosis of scoliosis in pregnancy should be discussed with your orthotist, therapist and gynecologist.
