If the Urine is Cloudy During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, you go to see your doctor more often than before. You attend check-ups, take regular tests, one of which is the urinalysis. This is very important as your urine can tell a lot about the pregnancy. Cloudy urine in pregnancy appears for some reason. It is a bad sign. Therefore, if you have noticed it, immediately go to your gynecologist.

Causes of the Cloudy Urine During Pregnancy

Now when you are pregnant, you are not alone, there are you and your baby. Such substances such as phosphate are used to form the skeleton of the baby (in the future they will be responsible for the production of breast milk). Therefore, the amount of salt in your body decreases. Its increase results in cloudy urine.

What Does it Mean?

If the amount of salt in your body increases, this testifies of a genitourinary infection or a renal disease. The other cause of the cloudy urine is the hormonal failure. The tests will help to identify the exact cause.

However, not only salt makes your urine cloudy. The presence of bacteria, large numbers of leukocytes and erythrocytes also affects its transparency. The doctors make conclusions about your health status based on the balance of these substances in your urine.

They not only reveal the composition of urine, but also measure its ph. The normal range is between 4.5 and 8; the hypoacidity is diagnosed if the result is less than 4.5 while the diagnosis is hyperacidity is made if the result is greater than 8. In case of an absence of explicit reasons for this diagnosis, the hypoacidity testifies of lack of fluid, early toxemia and potassium deficiency, while the hyperacidity is a symptom of a renal disease. So if you have had any kidney problems before the pregnancy, inform your gynecologist at the next appointment.

If leukocytes are found in the cloudy urine of a pregnant woman, this is a sign of a bladder or urinary tract infection, which leads to cystitis, pyelonephritis or urolithiasis.

Protein may be also present in the urine. However, due to the huge load on kidneys, its presence in the urine is normal (in small amounts). If the result exceeds 300 mg per day, in early pregnancy it is a symptom of a renal disease, while in the late terms it testifies of developing edema and pre-eclampsia in the second half of pregnancy.

What to Do and How to Avoid it?

The right treatment can be assigned only by a doctor and only after receiving the results of the urinalysis. The treatment may not involve drugs administration. A salt-free diet can be very effective to make your urine transparent. You will have to cut the consumption of salt to minimum or avoid it at all (e.g., salt only soups and eat salads and second courses without salt + stop eating pickles, salty fish, etc.).

Birch juice is also helpful. If the cloudy urine is caused by a renal disease, you should eat more boiled meat, raisins, apricots, plums, boiled fish, eggs, apples, beets (it can make the urine dark during pregnancy), fresh carrots, boiled potatoes. You can also use folk remedies to remove the excess salt from the body. Many recipes can help to solve this problem.

The most popular are:

  1. Three times a day drink half a teaspoon of fresh celery root juice.
  2. Mix in equal parts olive oil, honey and freshly squeezed lemon juice. Take a teaspoon of the mixture in the morning on an empty stomach.

Attention: only a doctor can decide whether you can use these recipes during pregnancy. It is not worth to decide it on your own. Be sure to consult your doctor! Remember that cloudy urine during pregnancy can be treated successfully. The main thing is to have a positive approach and follow the doctor’s advice!
