Augmentin in Pregnancy

Any medication during pregnancy is undesirable, and especially antibiotics. They affect all the organs and systems, change the composition of the blood, lymph and other physiological fluids. When entering through the placental barrier they can lead to changes in the formation of the fetus and cause developmental problems. So why so dangerous medicines are prescribed in such a crucial period for a woman?

During pregnancy the woman is not immune from a bacterial infection, which can only be cured with antibiotics. The doctor has to weigh the risk for fetal development while prescribing the medication and the risk of disease for the condition of a woman. That's why "Augmentin" is prescribed during pregnancy as one of the safest drugs.

Antibiotic "Augmentin"

The basic components of medication are amoxicillin trihydrate and potassium clavulanate. It comes in pills and as a powder for suspension.

Indication for its prescription are infectious diseases:

  • respiratory system-upper and lower respiratory tracts;
  • urinary system;
  • gynecological organs;
  • skin.

it is also used after operations and secondary infection. The possibility of habituation of pathogenic flora to it is quite low. Through a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity the application of the drug "Augmentin" is justified when pathogens secrete beta-lactamase, which provides resistance to amoxicillin. In combination of amoxicillin with clavulanic acid the medication has the desired effect.

Contraindications

  • individual reaction to the components-as amoxicillin is the penicillin derivative, so in rejecting penicillin and cephalosporin it should be prescribed with caution; jaundice in anamnesis;
  • liver dysfunction;
  • phenyl ketonuria is a genetic disease that is associated with the clear of phenylalanine;
  • kidneys dysfunction;
  • children up to 3 months;
  • weight less than 40 kg – for tableted form.

Side Effects

Antibiotic Augmentin and Pregnancy: Are They Safe?

  • gastrointestinal tract-vomiting, nausea, indigestion – often; nervous system-headache, dizziness-infrequently, in rare cases – convulsions;
  • blood system-changing of blood composition, increased coagulability, reducing the number of red blood cells-seldom-reactions reversible in most cases;
  • immune system-acute anaphylaxis-in rare cases;
  • symptoms-urticaria, candidiasis – often.

Unwanted reaction can occur immediately when conducting the therapy or manifest while accumulating gradually. There are data about side effects after a few weeks after the end of treatment. Liver side effects are reversible, but manifest themselves quite hard, so it is recommended to prescribe hepatotoxic drugs along with this antibiotic.

Dosage adjustments of "Augmentin" carried out during treatment help to avoid side effects. During pregnancy taking the drug is possible only under a doctor's supervision, who should-according to the clinical picture-increase or decrease the dosage of medication.

Augmentin and Pregnancy

Studies of the drug during pregnancy were carried out on animals and there were no adverse effects on the fetus from teratogenicity – no abnormalities in the formation of life-support systems were found. However, at women, for the treatment of which "Augmentin" was used, in case of preterm birth increased number of neonatal colitis and enterocolitis was marked. Using of antibiotic is not connected with preterm birth.

Each trimester of pregnancy plays a special role in the formation of the fetus. In the first one all the basic systems and organs are set, in the second – they are formed and in the third – they develop and begin to carry out their functions. "Augmentin" during pregnancy in 1st trimester is not prescribed, to avoid the possible negative impacts of the main components of the evolving organism.

"Augmentin" is prescribed during pregnancy in 2nd and 3rd trimester. Correct dosage will help avoid side effects. The normal course of intake of the drug is from 5 to 10 days. 625 g of the drug is prescribed 3 times a day or 875 g in the morning and evening. During pregnancy the suspension is advised to take – 5 ml single dose up to 3 times per day. A special dosage may be required – a dose of the drug 1 time per day.

Before changing the dosage form the doctor should be informed. During pregnancy the other type of use of medication may be recommended: 1 time a day a tablet is taken and a dose of suspension is added to it, calculated individually. Despite the fact that the suspension according to the instructions is recommended to be made each time before use, you can dilute the remedy in advance and up to 5 days keep it in refrigerator in a covered container.

In most cases, treatment by "Augmentin" leads to the secondary inflammatory processes-candidiasis and skin reactions. These conditions also require therapeutic treatment. The doctor takes the decision on the prescription of drugs which control side effects of amoxicillin during pregnancy. Correctness of therapy confirms the general condition-in 2-3 days the symptoms of bacterial infection should be gone. But this does not mean that the treatment may be stopped.

Antibiotic must be taken in full to completely destroy pathogenic flora. This is especially important during pregnancy. Under favorable conditions it can cause repeated outbreak before delivery or during lactation, and then again the health of the child will be put at risk.
