What is Morning Sickness During Pregnancy?

Sickness accompanied sometimes by vomiting is the very first symptom of pregnancy that occurs very often. Approximately 50 to 70 % of women experience it during the first trimester of pregnancy. Sickness is a natural process that proves that the course of your pregnancy is going fine.

It is called “morning sickness” due to the fact that it is exactly in the morning when the symptom occurs and it is very strong. At the same time, you may feel sick and exhausted during any other time of a day when you are pregnant.

What are the Reasons for Morning Sickness During Pregnancy?

The hCG hormone is considered to be the reason for the symptom. This hormone is produced by the developing placenta and it contributes to sustaining pregnancy. However, there may be other reasons here. For example, low level of sugar in blood, increased gastric acidity, stress and feeling tired.

Strategies on how to Prevent the Occurrence of Sickness

Keep crackers without additives, crispbread, rice cake or, probably, a piece of chocolate on your bedside cabinet. You need to eat something of the food mentioned right after you wake up in order to increase the level of sugar in blood before you get up.

  • Instead of eating 3 times a day (rather substantial portions), eat 5-6 times a day (small portions). This way your stomach will never be empty and the level of sugar in blood will be stable.
  • There should be enough protein (meat, fish, eggs, cheese) and complex carbs (fruits, vegetables, whole grains) in your diet. They are necessary for the developing organism of your baby.
  • Some nutrition experts recommend taking 50-100 mg of B6 vitamin apart from taking usual vitamins for pregnant women if you won’t to prevent sickness.
  • Try to have a rest more often. Do not eat spicy food products that contain a lot of fat. You shouldn’t be in too hot places too long so that not to sweat too much.

What to do if You Have Morning Sickness

If you feel sick, try doing the following:

  • Relax. Breathe slowly – breathe into the nostrils and out of the mouth. Think of something pleasant and focus on it.
  • Do not look, smell or taste the products and substances (for example, tobacco smell) that make you sick.
  • Have a suck at or chew pieces of ice or a piece of lemon.
  • If brushing your teeth makes you sick, try using mouthwash instead of toothpaste. Use it regularly and as often as possible for your mouth cavity to always stay clean and fresh.
  • Drink a glass of milk or take 2 calcium pills in order to get rid of acid in your stomach.
  • Eat ginger. It is a natural product that helps fighting against sickness. Grate it and add vegetables or other products to it.
  • Deink chamomile or ginger tea.
  • Drink enough water. Drink water even if you are not going to eat solid foods. Try not to mix solid and liquid foods. This may contribute greatly to fighting against morning sickness.

If sickness and vomiting occur regularly (they occur more often than once or twice a day), you can’t eat and drink water because of them, you lose more than 5 % of your weight, you have constipation for more than 2-3 days, your skin and eyes become yellowish or the symptom continues to occur during the second trimester, you need to tell your doctor about it.

When will Morning Sickness Disappear?

Good news is that majority of pregnant women stop experiencing morning sickness when the fourth month of pregnancy comes. At this time, the level of hormones starts to decrease s bit. Do not forget to remind yourself that sickness is a natural symptom that will soon disappear. Focus on the positive emotions your pregnancy brings you and on how happy you’ll be once your baby is born.
