What is a Miscarriage and When Does it Happen?

This term is widely used if a woman lost her baby on an early term of pregnancy. It doesn’t matter whether a woman had an ectopic pregnancy or not. On average, in 20-25% out of all cases of pregnancy there happens a miscarriage. It happens while the term of pregnancy is yet very early and a woman may not even know that she had a miscarriage. In this article, we use the term “miscarriage” while doctors call this case “a spontaneous abortion”.

Types of Miscarriage

Induced abortion – is a planned termination of pregnancy that a woman decides to make at her own will. Sometimes, there is a need to make an induced abortion due to the fact that a mother or her baby has a serious disease.

Spontaneous abortion (a miscarriage) – is a case when the fetus and the membranes are pushed out of the body before the 28th week of pregnancy. Some doctors say that it may happen before the 20th or before the 24th week. In other words, it is a case when pregnancy is terminated before a baby can survive outside of his/her mother’s womb. As many as almost 75 % of miscarriages happen before the 12th week of pregnancy – on an early term of pregnancy.

Incomplete abortion is a case when there are some tissues left in the uterus. In this case, there will be a need to undergo the procedure of curettage in order to remove the tissues left out of the uterine cavity.

Complete abortion – a case that, most often, occurs on the late terms of pregnancy (during the period between the 12th to the 28th week). In this case, the fetus and all the membranes are pushed out of the body. Consequently, a woman doesn’t need to undergo the procedure of curettage.

Recurrent abortion. The term is used if a woman had more than two cases of spontaneous abortion in a row.

Many women are diagnosed with “threatened miscarriage”. However, in the majority of cases, it’s possible to save your baby if you go to your doctor on time.

Curettage (scraping) of the uterine cavity. This procedure is carried out only after a patient has been sedated or given general/local anesthesia. As a rule, a doctor decides what to give in accordance with the peculiarities of a case.

Symptoms How Does a Miscarriage Happen

If it’s about a threatened miscarriage, there isn’t much the woman, her relatives and even healthcare providers can do. This is also a hard challenge and a woman is worried and at a loss all the time.

A pregnant woman is said to undergo an ultrasound examination. A radiologist will be able to detect the baby’s heartbeat and the cervical dilation during the procedure. As sad as it is but if the heart of the baby is not beating and the cervix is open, it means that a miscarriage has already happened or it will definitely happen in the nearest future.

Despite the fact that there is such a diagnosis as a threatened miscarriage, miscarriage may happen even if you don’t have any signs of that it will happen. It doesn’t matter whether it’s your first or second baby.

The very first symptoms of miscarriage are:

  • Uterine bleeding that may become stronger with time.
  • Painful contractions in the lower area of your abdomen. They feel like the pain you have during periods.

Once a complete abortion happens, bleeding stops and painful sensations disappear. If there has been an incomplete abortion, the symptoms won’t go away until you undergo the procedure of curettage.
