Is Zofran Okay During Pregnancy?

Many pregnant women beware of taking medications during the first weeks of pregnancy, as this period is considered to be determinative for the developing fetus. Sometimes, it is difficult to predict the effect, which a certain drug may produce on a baby.

However, the expectant mothers can be sure of a drug, which has become popular in use by pregnant women in the early stages of pregnancy. Zofran (Ondansetron) is used for treating nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. A recent study, conducted by the researchers from the State Serum Institute (SSI) in Copenhagen, has proved that Zofran is safe for use in the early stages of pregnancy and poses no risks to the developing fetus.

The results of the study were published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). The Danish researchers examined 608,385 women in Denmark, who were using Zofran in the period of pregnancy. The extensive statistical investigation of the women’s health showed positive results, proving that the use of Zofran caused no adverse consequents of pregnancy, such as miscarriages, stillbirth, premature birth, congenital defects and poor weight in newborns.

It is well-known that morning sickness is one of the most common signs of pregnancy. Though this symptom is natural for pregnancy, it may become intense and cause severe vomiting in some cases that can lead to the dehydration of organism.

Is it Safe To Use Zofran During Pregnancy?

Despite the fact that originally Zofran had been produced for other medical purposes, its popularity in use during pregnancy significantly increased over the last decade. The majority of gynecologists recommend Zofran to their patients in the early period of pregnancy. However, the use of Zofran in pregnancy was not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The results of the conducted study were very important, first of all because the safety of the drug and its effect on the developing fetus had not been proven. Moreover, there was a case, when the increased risk of cleft palate development in newborns was associated with the use of Zofran during pregnancy. However, the researchers proved that this assertion was groundless.

Therefore, this study is aimed to reassure the expectant mothers, who are using Zofran at the present time and help those women who are planning to have children to make a positive decision.
