Child Development, Your Baby at 14 Months

At the age of 14 months the toddlers begin to actively develop. Now the most important thing is to start walking. The whole first year was the preparation for the first steps of your baby. If he still refuses to walk independently, then watch him. Perhaps you yourself do not give him the incentive to walk: often carry in your arms, bring the toys.

Then there is absolutely no sense of walking single-handedly. The mental development of the child is now aimed at forming of personality. It's quite normal that the baby is interested in everything, trying to get everywhere. He explores the possibilities of his body and the world around. Do not scold him for it, but make sure that the baby would not cause harm to himself. Now is the time to set a lock on the door, remove all sharp and dangerous objects away from curious hands of the little one.

Physical Development

Typically, the weight of the baby at 14 months is already slightly more than 8 kg, with a height of approximately 70-75 cm. Monthly the baby gains quite a bit. His physical activity increases, so now you might think that the baby has lost weight. It's true. The fat from legs and hands disappears, they get stretched. Now the child's body resembles the body of an adult, it has become proportionate.

The most important moment of physical development now is the first steps. Don't get upset if the kid still isn't ready to walk. Most children at this age hold the hand of an adult, or the walls. They refuse to walk single-handedly. It is very important not to pressure him. Of course, there should be no yelling, screaming and aggression.

Mental Development

The mental development of children at 14 months passes surprisingly quickly. It's time for learning, curiosity, exploration of the surrounding world. The most correct behavior of parents is patience, and once again patience. You will need it, as a curious kid will find a variety of ways to satisfy his interest.

Speaking

Now the child has in stock 5-8 words which he speaks confidently. There are many sounds, incomprehensible babbling. He does his best, so by all means help the kid. The most important thing is that the kid knows many more words than he can say. During this time, he has remembered almost all of the words from everyday use. So, if a mom asks to give a cup or bring the ball -the kid would do that. Active development of speaking ability has only just begun.

Period from 1 year to 2 years is considered the most progressive. As early as 2-2.5 years he will build simple phrases, ask questions and talk a little. Don't worry, if in 1 year you've not counted these 5-8 words in the child's vocabulary. Let him only utter "mama", "give", "baba", but surely. He will soon catch up with his "norm". Development of speaking ability directly depends on whether the parents are talking with the child, read to him, whether he has the possibility to communicate with other children.

The Personality of the Child

At this time, the baby may seem to you to be very capricious. He often shouts "no", repels the hands of the parents, can refuse from a lot of things. At first glance, the reasons for this behavior are incomprehensible and illogical. More than 3-4 months ago he was an obedient toddler, perceived everything with a smile. The fact of the matter is that personality development at this stage has come to a certain stage. The child is aware of his independence. Not only physically, but also psychologically.

In the 14 months many babies can already walk. Their movements are not so heavily dependent on the parents. He can take some decisions on his own. With many children this is manifested as refusal of some meals or clothing, reluctance to use, for example, blue spoon, and always demanding the red one. The parents need to be patient. This is a crisis period that you just need to survive.

Imitation of Adults

Now that's funny — the kid imitates adult behavior. He can sit on the couch in the same pose as the dad. He copies the behavior of those who are close. This is a normal process, you should not scold the toddler for grimaces. In the same way as the behavior the children will copy the speaking of the parents. Start watching how you're moving, what you're doing, saying.

Curiosity

At the age of 14 months the interest to the exploration of the world is already apparent. You may think that he just throws and breaks the toys.

Do not scold him for that. Of course, you should not allow the little one to create chaos at home. On the other hand, he thus explores the limits of his abilities, properties of objects. For example, what he would be able to lift, how far to throw? What will happen to the toy, if stepped on or put in water? All these little experiences come spontaneously in his head, but something is remembered. This is the first research experience.

What to do if the Child Still Does Not Walk

In all the books on child's development, you'll see that the first time step falls on 10-13 months. But what if the baby does not walk in the 14th month? Refuses, flops on the bippy and cries, for example. Or dares to walk only with the support of an adult. For a child it is too a stressful moment, because this should be his very first steps. There are two things to consider: psychological and physical preparedness. Or unpreparedness.

Physical Preparedness

For this the preparation of the child from the very first days of life is important It is noticed that the baby should not be left lying on the back. Of course, thus it is much more comfortable for him, but it doesn't stimulate the movements. Put him on the tummy, then he will try to roll over, and the muscles tense up. Perhaps he just is not ready. And yet, there are two important points to consider:

  • the baby uses only his hands and the legs seem to be limp;
  • it is unpleasant for him to sit or stand up, and he is sitting crooked.

This can be serious. Such signs indicate a decreased tonus of leg muscles. You definitely need to consult your doctor for advice. This may be the reason why he is in no hurry to get up on the legs.

Psychological Preparedness

If you ask the child's parents about psychological reasons, they can think about it for a long time, but they will not mention any. Many parents simply dismiss the words "psychological" when it comes to 1-2 year old child. But in vain. The kid feels your mood, and has his psychological feelings. His psyche is already sufficiently developed to understand his parents well.

You need to make sure that he has an incentive to walk by himself. If he is always carried on the hands or in a stroller – why walk? If he wants to be on the hands — the mom immediately takes him. If he wants to see something on the top-shelf — he is lifted up, or given the thing in his hand. Then it makes no sense to walk, all desires are satisfied.

It is important to know and use:

  • you sit close to the baby on the floor. Ask him to give you a toy. The mom should not move towards the baby. He can first crawl, then he will attempt to get up. This is a good exercise for muscle training;
  • has the baby walked at least half a step by himself? Praise him, tell him how you are proud of him. He understands your mood, so he will want again to receive such a praise;
  • modern baby jumpers are not the best helpers. The baby pushes them with the belly or chest. It will not teach him to keep his balance;
  • If the kid is physically healthy, try to stimulate his interest in movements. Everything will be fine. Maybe not as fast as other children, but we are all unique. It's worth to take it into account before you start worrying.
